In this short video, David discusses how leaders can build trust in their teams. Many organisations today face a serious trust deficit between employees, managers, and leadership.
Research by Dr Paul Zak, a neuroscientist, shows that trust is closely linked to the production of oxytocin — a brain chemical that fosters collaboration, innovation, and high performance. When teams experience high levels of oxytocin, they become more motivated, resilient, and willing to take on challenges.
So, how can managers create a culture of trust? Here are eight practical strategies you can implement:
Acknowledge outstanding work frequently and consistently. Regular recognition helps people understand what good performance looks like and reinforces positive behaviours.
Provide your team with clear, achievable challenges. Stretching people just enough to energise them — without overwhelming them — boosts engagement and motivation.
Empower employees by allowing them to make decisions about how they achieve their goals. Autonomy shows trust in their judgment and skills.
Encourage team members to shape their roles based on their strengths and passions. When people are aligned with their strengths, they perform better and feel more fulfilled.
Frequent communication builds transparency. Teams that are well-informed feel more trusted, valued, and secure in their roles.
Intentionally foster strong relationships with your team. Show genuine interest in their growth, interests, and aspirations — both professionally and personally.
Support your employees’ development beyond just workplace skills. Encouraging personal growth builds loyalty and deepens trust.
Be open about your own challenges and limitations. By admitting when you don’t have all the answers, you demonstrate authenticity — a key factor in building trust.
Building trust isn’t just about words — it’s about consistent actions. By embracing these strategies, you’ll foster stronger relationships, improve collaboration, and drive performance.
