receiving critical feedback

At some point in your career, you will receive critical feedback. It happens to everyone. But instead of seeing it as something negative or using it to beat yourself up, you can turn it into a powerful tool for growth and improvement.

There are a few key strategies to make receiving critical feedback a more productive and effective experience. Watch the below video to hear David explain these strategies.

1. Don’t Take Critical Feedback Personally

Feedback is not about you as a person—it’s about a specific behaviour in a particular situation. Separating who you are from what you did helps you stay objective and avoid emotional reactions.

2. Listen and Acknowledge

If someone is taking the time to give you critical feedback, it means they care enough to want you to improve. Show them that you are listening by acknowledging their points.

Even if it’s uncomfortable, thank them for the feedback. This simple step diffuses tension and encourages constructive dialogue.

3. Ask for Clarification

If something is unclear, ask for specific examples. Understanding exactly what you said or did, and how it impacted the situation, helps you make targeted improvements.

Try asking:
✔ “Can you give me an example of when this happened?”
✔ “What impact did my actions have?”
✔ “What would you suggest I do differently next time?”

4. If You Agree, Own It and Improve

If the feedback is valid, acknowledge it. Say, “I see your point. I made a mistake.” Then, shift the conversation towards solutions:

How can I improve so this doesn’t happen again?

This shows maturity and a commitment to professional growth.

5. If You Disagree, Share Your Perspective

If you don’t fully agree, that’s okay—but stay open-minded. Instead of being defensive, say:

I see where you’re coming from, but from my perspective…

Then, ask for their input:

Given my circumstances, what would you have done in my position?

If their feedback isn’t constructive and they’re simply venting, you can acknowledge it, say “Thanks for your perspective,” and move on.

6. Recognise the Opportunity for Growth

A growth mindset is key to success. Even if critical feedback is uncomfortable, see it as a learning opportunity. Instead of dwelling on it, reflect, adapt, and improve.

Ask yourself:
👉 How can I use this to become even better?
